Tax time

And in other news, I've downloaded the 2004 Canada Tax forms and calculated what I owe with the information from my last pay stub of the year (I need no other numbers). Unlike the last few years, I finally would have had a refund of a bit less than $100...

...except that the Ontario government has slapped a surprise, unannounced "Ontario Health Premium" tax on anyone making $20k or more. I can't find any other provincial government doing the same. In essence, Ontario no longer has 'free' (i.e. no extra tax) health services - you pay extra for it at the end of the year. And it is enough to make me pay nearly $150 now.

I think the Ontario Liberals just lost the next election...

(I'm not sure how I feel about it, but it should have been clearly announced well in advance, at the very least.)

EDIT: Okay, they did announce it six months ago. But calling it a "premium" and placing it right at the end of the tax calculations will make people call it a health tax. They should have made a reminder. As many other things the Liberals have done, it's a good idea, but badly executed and poorly publicised. Say what you will of the Tories, they had good PR people...
